Michael Snow (b. 1929) is one of the most remarkable multi-disciplinary Canadian artists.
Snow is renowned for a diverse body of work including experimental films, jazz recordings, sculpture, the "Walking Woman" series, and large-scale public art.
Perhaps one of the most interesting characteristics of Snow's output is his ability to alternate between creating work that is populist and work that is avant-garde and esoteric.
Like many of Snow's works from his broad output, "Wood Calling" is both esoteric and conceptual, yet has a playful allusion to Pop Art. The distorted shape of the old-fashioned telephone is reminiscent of Cubist art and 60's creations by Claes Oldenburg or George Segal.
Created in 1989, a full bronze version of this sculpture can be found in the Donald Forster Sculpture Park in Guelph, Ontario. Snow has a history of high-profile sculptures in Ontario including "The Audience" at Rogers Centre and "Flight Stop" in the Eaton Centre.
